Cyber Safety Rules for Social Networking:

  • Be careful who you trust online. A person can pretend to be someone they are not.
  • Choose your friends. While it’s good to have a lot of friends, having too many makes it harder to keep an eye on who sees the stuff you post online. Don’t accept friend requests if you’re not sure about the person.
  • Keep your personal details private . Use a nickname instead of your real name if you are in a site or game where there may be lots of people you don’t know. Ask your parents before giving anyone on the internet your name, address, phone number or any other personal details.
  • Set your profile to private, or ask your parents to help you do this.
  • Always keep your password secret. Don’t even share it with your friends.
  • If you want to arrange to meet someone you’ve met online, check with a parent first and ask them to go with you. Always meet in a public place, preferably during the day.
  • If someone writes something rude, scary or something you don't like, tell your parents or another adult you trust.

What is a blog?
A blog is like an online diary where individuals or groups can write posts about anything and everything. We use our class blog to share what we have been doing in class. Others from anywhere in the world can view our blog and leave us comments about our learning.

Each child in Room 3 also has their own blog where they can share their writing about recent events, along with their stories and articles. On these blogs we can also post survey questions for research and present our learning using Web 2.0 and 3.0 tools to create slide shows and movies.

It is important that students receive feedback from their friends, teachers and most importantly family. Our class blog, and your child's blog is an important record of their learning. It may not always have perfectly correct spelling or punctuation, but as they become more aware that they are writing for a real audience they will understand the importance of getting these surface features correct.

What is a wikispace?
A wikispace is similar to a blog but rather than working like a diary in chronological order, new pages can be added like a contents page down the side of the page; many pages can be added in this way and they may appear more like a web page than a blog. Wikispaces can be shared with others so that more than one person can work on it at anyone time; they can also be protected so they may not be changed by anyone else.

Here is a clip by CommonCraft explaining what a wiki is and how it could be used:
